Abstract

This study aims to obtain a description of solving sequences problems through the Newman stage in terms of the mathematical ability of grade VIII students of SMPN 19 Palu. The results showed that: (1) highly capable subjects: at the stage of reading problems, can understand question sentences, the stage of understanding problems, can determine what is known and what is asked, the stage of problem transformation, able to determine the methods to be used in the problem solving process, the stage of process skills, can apply problem solving strategies appropriately, the stage of re-checking, can re-examine step by step and  Believing the Truth of the Answer. (2) Moderately capable subjects: at the stage of reading problems, able to understand question sentences, at the stage of understanding problems, can determine what is known and what is asked, problem transformation stage, able to determine the methods to be used in the problem solving process but unable to apply existing methods.(3) Low-ability subjects: at the stage of reading the problem, can understand the sentences of the problem, the stage of understanding the problem, only rewrite the information in the problem without being able to convert it into mathematical language.
