Abstract

Early reading skills are essential competencies that elementary school students must master as a foundation for literacy development and future academic achievement. However, observations conducted in Grade II of SDN 9 Mamboro revealed that many students experienced difficulties in recognizing letters, reading syllables, reading simple sentences, and comprehending texts. This study aimed to improve students’ early reading skills through the application of the Structural Analytic Synthetic (SAS) method. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, conducted in two cycles involving 26 Grade II students during the first semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through observation, tests, questionnaires, and documentation, and analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative techniques. The findings showed a significant improvement in students’ early reading skills after the implementation of the SAS method. Learning mastery increased from 35.36% in the preaction stage to 63.8% in Cycle I and 92.28% in Cycle II. Improvements were also observed in letter recognition, syllable pronunciation, word reading, sentence reading, and reading comprehension. Therefore, the SAS method proved effective in enhancing the early reading skills of Grade II students at SDN 9 Mamboro.
