Abstract

This study aims to improve the reading skills of third-grade students at SDN 20 Sindue through the implementation of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model. This research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) method based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, which consists of four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The study was conducted in two cycles carried out systematically to improve the learning process. The subjects of this study were 12 third-grade students of SDN 20 Sindue. Data collection techniques included observations of teacher and student activities, interviews, field notes, and learning outcome tests. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive qualitative and quantitative approaches by calculating the percentage of learning completeness. The results showed that the implementation of the CTL model significantly improved students’ reading skills. Learning completeness increased from 83.3% in Cycle I to 100% in Cycle II. In addition, students’ activity and engagement in the learning process also improved and were categorized as good. Therefore, the CTL model is effective in improving students’ reading skills
